The 49ers’ Big Day

In Sunday’s week five match up with the Bills, the 49ers scored 45 and became the first team in NFL history to record 300 yards rushing and passing in the same game. San Francisco’s offensive outburst was unprecedented, as only nine other teams have accumulated 275 yards rushing and passing in the same game. The last team to reach those totals were the 1987 Washington Redskins, in their 42-10 defeat of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII.

We’ve put together some other interesting facts about San Francisco’s big Sunday (and Buffalo’s bad year).

  • It’s been two years since a team rushed for 300 yards in a game, when the Raiders racked up 328 yards on the ground on 10/24/2012.
  • This is the third time in five weeks the Bills have allowed 40+ points, having previously lost 48-28 to the Jets week one and 52-28 to the Patriots last week.
  • The Bills have given up an average of 277.8 yards passing a game to a list of quarterbacks that include the less-than-impressive Mark Sanchez, Matt Cassel, and rookie Brandon Weeden.
  • The Bills became the first team in NFL history to allow 575 yards of offense in consecutive weeks since the merger. In fact, they are the first team to do since the New York Yanks in 1950.

  • The Bills are the first team since the merger to allow 575 yards twice in a season.
  • In 2011 five teams recorded 575 yards of total offense, the most in history. There have been four teams reach that total this season through five weeks.
  • The 49ers have outscored their opponents, the Jets and Bills, 89-3 over the last two weeks.
  • San Francisco, paced by starter Frank Gore, recorded 311 rushing yards. That is more than Dallas and Oakland have total through four games.
  • The 49ers held Buffalo to only 204 total yards, a margin of 417 yards. Only 14 other teams have recorded a margin that large since the merger.
  • Buffalo was led on the ground by Brad Smith, who rushed one time for 35 yards. Four 49ers surpassed that total, including RBs Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter and QBs Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick.
