Chicago River Dyed Green

Chicago River 560x373

There are many parades and proud traditions that take place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, but the dying of Chicago River is by far our favorite. Each year since 1962, the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union Local 130 dump containers of dye into the river from motorboats. Sadly the tradition was put on hold in 2020 due to COVID, but it made its triumphant return unexpectedly today!

The event takes place the morning of the St. Patrick’s Day parade, while thousands of onlookers cheer, and the effect is truly amazing. Sadly the greatest impact of the coloring only lasts about 12 hours, but the photographs last forever. We’ve collected a gallery of our favorites from the past several years, and suggest you put this event on your bucket list.
