DVD Pick of the Week 11/4/08

Gunaxin.com’s DVD Pick of the Week

I know, I know, it’s a little late this week, I’ll have to work on that in the future.

First off, let me just say that there are some awesome releases this week like Kung Fu Panda, Barbie in a Christmas Carol, and Radio City Christmas Spectacular Starring The Rockettes. Not only that but there are plenty of rereleases like the Star Wars Prequels, the Original Trilogy, and Waterworld which is good if you don’t already own them, I guess. Of course, there are a few DVDs that might actually be worth picking up, so I’ll talk a little more about those.

To start things off, the hilarious Steve Carrell and the beautiful Anne Hathaway have teamed up to make Get Smart. I used to watch the repeats of Get Smart TV Show on nickelodeon when I was a kid. I’d watch as Maxwell Smart would bumble across the bad guys and stop them with his crazy gadgets like his shoe phone. I wonder if the movie can live up to those old memories. IMDB describes the movie as:

“Bungling secret agent Maxwell Smart, also known as Agent 86 for CONTROL, is on a mission to battle the forces of their evil crime nemesis known as KAOS with his more-competent partner Agent 99, (whose real name is never revealed) at his side. When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreams of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23. Smart will do whatever it takes to thwart the latest plot for world domination by KAOS.”

The next candidate for DVD of the Week is Reaper Season 1. Reaper is a TV show on the CW, it stars Bret Harrison (who also starred in The Loop), Tyler Labine (also from Traveler), and Missy Peregrym (Candice from Heroes). Its second season should be starting in January.

I’ll let Amazon.com explain the plot:

“Sam (Bret Harrison) is a slacker whose world turns upside down on his 21st birthday when he learns that his parents sold his soul to the Devil (Ray Wise). Forced to be Hell’s bounty hunter, Sam, with the aid of his goofball friends, must track down evildoers and send them back where they belong.”

This week’s DVD of the Week is Futurama: Bender’s Game! You might say that “this is not a real man’s dvd” you’d point out that there aren’t any hot women or intense action or explosions. I’d counter that it’s a “real geek’s pick” and geeks are men too, that even though it’s a cartoon there is a hot cyclops woman, fantastical action and who knows there might be an explosion. What could be wrong with a show with “P=NP” jokes, a character who complains that the judges of a quantum finish changed the outcome by measuring it, and the main character (a pizza delivery boy) who gets cryogenically frozen for 3000 years and is then employed by his senile old distant nephew who employes him as an intergalactic delivery boy. Futurama the TV show was cancelled in 2003, and has been brought back as a series of straight to DVD movies, this is the 3rd of the 4 made so far.

Wikipedia describes it as follows:

“Bender’s imagination runs wild during a game of Dungeons & Dragons while the rest of the crew is out searching for answers about Mom’s mysterious dark matter mine. Strange events follow, mysteriously sending them into a fantastical, non-futuristic land of dragons and sorcery created by Bender’s imagination.”
