Embalming Fluid Robust Porter

P’s Family Brewing – Embalming Fluid – Robust Porter

P’s Family Brewing – Kalamazoo, MI

Information: The P’s Family Brewery is a relatively new beer production but what they lack in years they more than make up for in quality. Their Robust Porter is alive with coffee notes and chocolate hints that has a sweetness matched beautifully with its perfectly balanced hops. This is a nice beer to finish a meal and does a fine job of warming the soul. But why Embalming Fluid? Hey, sometimes catchy names are just that.

APV 5.5

At this writing I have done one other family-brewed beer and I think it’s kind of sad that not more people are trying their hands at an age-old and truly not that difficult a task. Myself included. I love beer and I love reviewing it, but I just haven’t gotten the bravery together to attempt brewing my own. But, until that day, I’m just gonna have to keep doing what I’m doing. I’m okay with that.

The pour is a very pretty dark, coffee-like brown with a nice nutty aroma that escapes right away. The head is a light tan that blankets the top with a nice wispy foam. There are subtle hints of cocoa and malts which are quite reminiscent of standard porter fare, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. Hidden deep within there’s something akin to maple syrup or maybe caramel… a sweetness for sure, and it’s there, but very quiet.

The taste is rich and buttery, with a nice, clean body. The tongue easily detects a few of the more phantom characteristics like the up-front chocolate, the malts that carry you right through the second act, and the caramel-syrup flavors that back up the finish. This is a very tasty beer with many subtle flavors hovering around. It’s a nice clean porter that fits right in with its genre with a few surprises here and there. I would pair this with a nice medium-rare porterhouse… oddly enough.

A great porter selection from a new, up-and-coming brewery.
