English Muffins Are More Than Just Breakfast Food

The humble English muffin has been on breakfast tables in the United States for over 100 years, and we often eat one just simply buttered after toasting it up nice and crispy. Many people enjoy breakfast sandwiches built with English muffins, normally paired with eggs and your favorite breakfast meat. The famed English muffin, with its signature air pockets, is capable of much more though. The good folks at Bays English Muffins have challenged us to think beyond breakfast, and utilize their fresh product for other meals too. They backed up that challenge by sending us a case of Bays English Muffins and a list of recipes to try from their website. The choices are numerous and look delicious, so we decided to feature a sampling of our favorites in this gallery :

For this challenge though, we wanted to keep it simple and stick with something that we knew we would enjoy eating and also execute with ease. Enter a trio of similar recipes from their website which we have decided to combine together into a crispy appetizer that will elevate any of your upcoming holiday gatherings. Most crucial is that the Crisps below are meant to be prepared in advance and can be kept for a couple of days if needed before serving. This means you can prepare them the day before and be ready to serve them regardless of when or where the party takes place.

Notes : We generally don’t believe in measuring, but if you need such guidance, that information can be found on the Bays Recipe Site. Also, we utilized the ingredients we had on hand rather than acquiring fresh parmesan, rosemary, and garlic. Obviously these crisps would be even better with those ingredients, but don’t be afraid to substitute or mix things up as you see fit. Have Fun!

English Muffin Crisps

Preheat oven to 375°F. Cut muffins crosswise into five strips per muffin half, arrange in a single layer, cut sides down, on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake 9 to 10 minutes or until light golden brown. Let cool to room temperature (strips will become crisper as they cool). Place strips in a medium bowl, and drizzle with melted butter. Toss until evenly coated. Return to baking sheet in a single layer, cut sides down.

All three varieties that we prepared start with the above directions, and then diverge with their own ingredients meant to be sprinkled on top of the crisps. The flavors below are tried and true, but don’t be afraid to experiment with other flavor combinations.

Parmesan & Garlic Crisps : Combine Parmesan Cheese, Garlic Powder, Sea Salt.

Rosemary & Sea Salt Crisps : Combine Rosemary and Sea Salt. (4:1)

Cinnamon & Sugar Crisps : Combine Sugar and Cinnamon (4:1)

Sprinkle crisps with seasoning mixture. Return to oven and bake another 5 to 6 minutes or until deep golden brown. Let cool before serving. Alternately you can dip the ends of the Cinnamon & Sugar Crisps into melted chocolate before serving as well. Store loosely covered at room temperature up to 3 days.

You can see all of the steps in our video below, where you’ll also notice that we utilized red colored sugar, for added festive flair.
