Holiday Driving in a Hyundai Genesis

Hyunda Genesis Feature 560x219

If your Holiday Season is anything like ours, it begins around Thanksgiving, and doesn’t end until New Year’s Day. In between we’re busy with shopping, parties, and hosting relatives. This year was no exception, so in order to help us get through our Holiday prep in style, we borrowed a 2015 Hyundai Genesis for a week. You can see it pictured below in our Instagram photo from the night we took it to the WAPA (Washington Automotive Press Association) Holiday Party.

You may recall that we spent a day with the new Genesis in May and loved it so much, we wanted to get more time behind the wheel. It’s one thing to experience a vehicle at a controlled press event, but it’s definitely another to put it through the paces in your daily life on roads that you know. So we took it to Holiday Parties and shopping, and drove a ton of miles in between. Sadly it rained for much of the week, so we don’t have many good photos, but we do have three feature areas we wanted to highlight from our extended holiday test-drive; Comfort, Safety, and Entertainment.

Hands-Free Trunk Opening Technology may sound superfluous, but when you’re carrying an arm full Christmas packages, you tend to fully appreciate this feature. We used it both when shopping for presents, and then after they were wrapped. Loading and unloading the massive trunk at both ends of the journey is made much easier by hands-free trunk opening technology. Just keep the key in your pocket and stand behind the car for 3 seconds, and magical things happen, as the guy in this video demonstrates…

Before you even load the vehicle with packages, you’re going to want to get it warmed up. So having Remote Start available through Bluelink is a definite need for holiday driving. Combine that with remote climate control and remote defroster, and the Genesis will be ready to go before you even have your shoes on. Sadly a heated steering wheel isn’t included on the Genesis, but we put the heated seats to good use during our extended test drive.

Holiday Driving is often done in the dark, on crowded roads, with stressed out drivers, and bad weather. So the advanced safety features in the Hyundai Genesis were fun to test out in these conditions, much to the dismay of my wife. While we didn’t have the HTRAC All-Wheel Drive model, we did do extensive testing of the Lane Departure Warning System, Smart Cruise Control, and even Automatic Emergency Braking. The Smart Cruise Control in particular was a favorite for highway driving, with its stop-start functionality that allows full function down to zero mph.

Coupled with the brilliant Heads-Up Display, these active driver safety technologies made us feel like the car was driving itself at times, which was probably the part that scared my wife. You can also get the Genesis equipped with Blind-Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and High-Beam Assist. Of course you still need to actively drive the car as you normally would, but these technologies can combine with your own driving skill to make you even safer on the road.

What holiday drive would be complete without some Christmas music on the radio? Luckily the Genesis came equipped with an ultra-premium, Lexicon® Discrete Logic 7 Surround audio system with 17 speakers, Logic 7 Surround Sound processing and 12-channel digital amplifier with 900-watts of equivalent output. Jingle Bell rock never sounded so good…

What can we say, in December the SiriusXM® Radio rarely makes it off the Holly Station in our car. The infotainment system boasts a gorgeous 9.2-inch 720p High Definition display, 64GB Solid State Drive (SSD) for multimedia, Gracenote® album art, and advanced voice recognition. The 2015 Hyundai Genesis has the comfort, safety, and entertainment features you’ll need for holiday driving, but it also comes with a plenty of style to turn heads when you pull up at the office party or in-laws’ house. For even more on the newest Genesis, check out our full review.
