How Mobile Has Changed the Way We Live

Since you woke up this morning, how many times have you reached for your mobile phone to perform an entire range of tasks—banking , checking email, sending a text, watching news, making a call? The global community has gone mobile. And it’s only getting faster and more advanced…hold on tight kids.

These days, phone calls are the least of what our mobile devices are capable of; from banking to texting, from email and social media to music, video, portals, and web searches, more and more of our daily activities around the world are conducted on mobile devices.

The infographic below from MobiTV, Inc. provides a comprehensive overview of the mobile world. The history of mobile phone usage; the banner years and technological breakthroughs; the number of users in developing countries; the extraordinary growth of mobile social networking — it’s all here.

The facts are fascinating (for example, did you know that 69% of mobile traffic is from streaming video?) and the numbers are overwhelming (six trillion text messages were sent in 2010). Most amazing of all, however, is the clear and very definite way this infographic displays the reality of the world in which we live today. This is a world where a man trapped under rubble after the earthquake in Haiti could use his phone to find a first aid app to treat his own wounds. It’s a world where Americans watch almost as many movies and TV shows on their phones as they do on their TVs. It’s a world where the Red Cross can raise millions of dollars in relief funds by inviting mobile users to text a code to donate $10.

Mobile technology is opening whole new worlds of possibility in every part of our lives. And with the number of worldwide mobile web users approaching the 1 billion mark, and mobile apps being downloaded in the tens of millions, there’s no telling what the next few years might bring.
