The Killer Joe Trailer Looks Seedy

I’ve always been a huge fan of director William Friedkin and not just for his classic films like The French Connection and The Exorcist. Sorcerer and To Live and Die in L.A. are two of my favorite underrated flicks. For the most part, Friedkin has been out of the game for the last fifteen years. Rules of Engagement and The Hunted were tepid at best, and Bug was too bizarre to be called great (although it was compelling at times).

His latest, Killer Joe, reminds me of the Coen Bros. early work in that it establishes a world where everyone is a piece of garbage desperate to earn some quick cash, no matter the method. The film stars Matthew “He’ll Always Be Wooderson To Me” McConaughey in the titular role, Emile Hirsch, Gina Gershon, Thomas Haden Church and Juno Temple.

Killer Joe opens July 27th but it’s rated NC-17, so good luck finding a theater with balls big enough to show it.
