Low Flying Planes!

Josef-Hoflehner-PlanesIt’s been a rough week for air travel, with a Malaysian passenger jet being shot out of the sky over Ukraine. It’s enough to give any air traveler anxiety, as the unthinkable is apparently possible. So to make you feel a bit better about being a passenger on an upcoming flight, we wanted to show you that it can be just as scary on the ground. That’ll do the trick, right?

Enter photographer Josef Hoflehner and his stunning collection of airplane images. These photos (and many more) were taken at Maho Beach, which is located next to the runway of Princess Juliana International Airport on the Dutch side of the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten. The scenes were captured over the course of four visits between 2009 and 2011, and show jets descending thrillingly close over the heads of cars and beach-goers. Relaxing!
