Make Your Own Moonshine – Legally
If you’re a fan of the hit television show, Moonshiners, chances are you’ve sat through an episode or two thinking about how you could make your own batch without getting caught. Because, seriously, it’s not like you want to sell it or anything. You just want to have a few jars of high-octane booze in the cabinet, just in case you need to lose your sight in a hurry.
Well, we can’t advise you on the best way to build a still, make the mash, distill the mash, run it through a thumper keg and condense the ethanol vapors into a very potent corn liquor, because that’s ILLEGAL. (See, ATF? We’re absolutely against moonshining, nothing to see here, please take us off your watch list now.)
But if you can get your hands on a few ingredients and some Everclear, we can help you mix up a batch of faux-shine that’s damn near as good as anything the good ol’ boys on the Discovery Channel have brewed so far. Keep in mind, by using pure grain alcohol or even a high quality vodka, you’re not truly making moonshine, rather, a reasonable facsimile thereof.
Apple Pie Moonshine
This is one of the best tasting, and most commercially available flavors of “moonshine” that you’ll find at your local liquor store. Ole Smoky Moonshine, Junior Johnson, Popcorn Sutton, etc, all have a government friendly shine on the market these days. It’s nowhere near as potent as the stuff Tim and Tickle distill in the hills of Virginia, but hey, it’s legal and it’s un-aged whiskey, therefore, it’s moonshine for all intents and purposes.
We know you want the high-powered stuff though, so here’s what you’ll need for the shine. Courtesy of Moonshine Heritage.
- 1 Gallon Apple Cider
- 1 Gallon Apple Juice
- 3 Cups White Sugar
- 8 Cinnamon Sticks
- 1 Liter bottle of Everclear (or other pure-grain alcohol) 191 proof (or whatever your local laws allow to be sold. You can also substitute a high quality unflavored vodka)
Boil everything in a pot, except for the liquor. Let the mix cool and pour in the Everclear. Strain the mix and pour into quart jars, seal and let mellow in a dark, cool place for a few weeks to a few months. Careful though, this stuff will sneak up on you fast.
Looking for another delicious moonshine recipe? No? Well here’s one for Peach Moonshine anyway. This one is courtesy of Good Ole Ways.
- ½ Gallon Welch’s White Grape Peach Juice
- 1 ½ Cups White Sugar
- 1 Can Sliced Peaches
- 3 Cinnamon Sticks
- ½ Cup Peach Schnapps
Put all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Allow it to cool. Now add the following:
- 1 Cup Everclear
- ½ Cup Peach Schnapps
Strain it and pour into jars. Allow it to mellow in a cool dark place for a few weeks.
Again, take it easy on this stuff. If you want a larger batch, just double the recipe. Or triple it. Or, well you get the point.
There are many more flavors you can mix, and you can find the recipes with a simple little Google search. We’re not your servants, don’t expect us to do everything for you.
If you decide to take it upon yourself to set up a still, and you get busted, don’t call us for legal advice. You know, because this article is strictly for educational purposes. <wink wink>
