Nosferatu: The Creepiest Dracula Ever
Dracula has been in films for 89 years now, but his first and creepiest appearance came under a different name, Nosferatu. This German film was released March 4, 1922, as an unauthorized retelling of Bram Stoker’s book. Instead of Count Dracula, he was Count Orlok, a rat-like vampire who walked like he had a stick up his butt, and whose shadow would scare even the boogieman himself. Adding to the creepy factor was that it was a silent film.
Stoker’s widow sued for copyright infringement and plagiarism, and the courts ruled for prints of Nosferatu to be destroyed. Like a vampire itself, the motion picture survived. Since then, fans have made their own unauthorized trailers using different music.
