Please Samsung, Give Me My OLED

Samsung recently unveiled its prototype 1080p 40-inch OLED display according to Tech On! At 8.9 mm thick and with a contrast ratio of 1 million to 1, all I can say is “I want one”.  Of course, Samsung says they don’t have the ability to mass produce OLEDs at this size right now, so I might be waiting for a while. They say, their mass production process currently tops out at 31″ for OLED, and will be available in 14″ through 31″ versions in the 2009/2010 timeframe. I say a 31″ OLED would look nice in my basement, not as nice as the 40 incher though. If you’re itching for an OLED right now, Sony will sell you an 11 inch model for $2500.

For those of you scratching your heads and asking “What is this whole OLED thing?” OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode and Wikipedia can fill you in on the rest:

“A significant benefit of OLED displays over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is that OLEDs do not require a backlight to function. Thus they draw far less power and, when powered from a battery, can operate longer on the same charge. Because there is no need for a backlight, an OLED display can be much thinner than an LCD panel. OLED-based display devices also can be more effectively manufactured than LCDs and plasma displays”
