That’s not Kevin Smith, it’s a space station!

Kevin Smith, the acclaimed director behind “Zach and Miri Make a Porno”, has announced that he is developing a space comedy. This film will followup “Red State”, a horror film Smith says was inspired by extremist preacher Fred Phelps.

According to the Hollywood Reporter:

“The film will reference other sci-fi movies and revolves around a father-son relationship. Smith has nodded to the genre in his earlier work but never made a sci-fi film.

The indie-minded Smith is aiming for a budget in the $45 million-$50 million range, which would be his biggest. He again will produce with partner Scott Mosier via their View Askew banner.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein, with whom Smith has collaborated on most of his movies, could reteam with Smith on the film. Insiders said that TWC execs have read part of the script and are interested in making the movie. Smith has finished a first draft of the script, but the project will not move forward until after his next project, “Red State.” Smith will not be doing that with the Weinsteins but instead is seeking independent financing and a spring start date for his dramatic tale of a domestic terrorist in the Heartland.”

Smith remarked of the higher budget “The moment someone steps out of the spaceship, it’s going to cost a little more”.

We’ve also recently learned that the Utah based Megaplex Theatres Chain will not be showing “Zach and Miri Make a Porno”. Getthebigpicture.net says:

The chain’s spokesman, Cal Gunderson, tells Page Six, that it’s just too raunchy for its audiences in Salt Lake City, Ogden, Lehi, and Sandy, Utah. “We feel it’s very close to an NC-17 with its graphic nudity and graphic sex,” says Megaplex’s Cal Gunderson. When asked why the same chain is showing Saw V, Gunderson replied, “No comment.”

Of course Megaplex is centered in a highly conservative area of a highly conservative state, so I doubt this ban will cause much of an impact in ticket sales. After seeing Orgazmo I thought that Mormons liked porn.

Kevin Smith’s previous films include:

  • Clerks
  • Mallrats
  • Chasing Amy
  • Dogma
  • Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
  • Jersey Girl
  • Clerks II
  • Zack and Miri Make a Porno

He’s also just released Sold Out: A Threevening With Kevin Smith the third of his interview series, the first two being An Evening with Kevin Smith and An Evening With Kevin Smith 2 – Evening Harder.
