UFC 90: Silva vs Cote Highlights

Yesterday evening, the underdog Patrick Cote lost to Anderson Silva due to an injured knee in the opening of round 3 although many thought Silva didn’t bother to try hard enough. You can’t blame him. After finishing the top two middleweights Dan Henderson with a rear-naked-choke and Rich Franklin with devastating strikes (twice), there just isn’t any talent and challenge left for the middleweight champ. Next in line to challenge Silva will be Yushin Okami, who defeated Silva in 2006 due to an illegal kick by Silva and the late Evan Tanner by KO, but Okami will really need to shine this time because luck doesn’t come every time.

Other notable mentions:

Josh Koscheck vs. Thiago Alves
Don’t you just love Thiago! The four-time NCAA All-American barely survived Thiago’s onslaught but it was a great fight by both fighters. All judges see the bout 30-27 (twice) and 29-28 for Alves. He’ll be fighting the welterweight champ George St. Pierre next.

Sean Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin
Best fight of the night in the lightweight division. After an emotional lost to B.J. Penn, Sean Sherk came to this fight with a lot of heart. The two fighters entertained the roaring crowd with non-stop actions throughout all three rounds. In the end, the judges saw Sherk stood out more and awarded him the victory by unanimous decision.

Rich Clementi vs. Gray Maynard
Long time MMA veteran Rich Clementi didn’t stand a chance against the 11th all-time MSU wrestler Gray Maynard. Maynard’s takedowns and body slams were too much for Clementi, defeating him by unanimous decision 30-27.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Junior dos Santos
The unknown heavyweight Junior dos Santos shocked the MMA world by knocking the highly favored Fabricio Werdum unconcious in the second minute of round one.
