USB 3.0 Cable On Sale Now!

USB 3.0USBFever.com has their first USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Cable available on their website right now.  It’s “around 2 meters” long, reportedly 10 times faster than USB 2.0, backward compatible with USB 2.0, 1.1 and 1.0, and available for only $9.99. The problem is that’s where the good stuff ends, and now it’s time to get our reality check on.

  1. The USB 3.0 spec won’t be ratified until the end of June.
  2. USB 3.0 peripherals won’t be available until 2010.
  3. This is a Male A to Male A USB Cable. Male A is the end that connects to your PC, and because of the way USB works, two computers can’t be connected directly together with this cable. In fact this cable could damage your USB ports if it’s hooked up this way. Also, I’ve never seen a peripheral that would need this type of connector, though that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

So, after getting past the fact that this is the first USB 3.0 related item we’ve seen for sale, the product isn’t looking very exciting. There won’t be any devices to take full advantage of it speed for at least 7 months, and they probably won’t work with a Male A to Male A cable once they are available. Then again it is only $10.
