Weekend Preview – Run Screaming
No, that’s not Bruce Willis cashing a paycheck, or Tracy Morgan setting back black people another twenty years, OR Sean William Scott proving that Stifler will haunt him until he dies. That’s Kevin Smith finally selling out to the studios years after it became clear “Dogma” was going to be his greatest movie and he might as well become a hack.
In case you’re wondering, Smith didn’t write the script. This promises to be beloved by the ten-year-olds who aren’t supposed to be seeing it and absolutely no one else.
One we’re a little more hesitant to judge is “The Crazies”, a remake of George Romero’s obscure horror movie about people going absolutely insane due to something in the water (this message brought to you by the John Birch Society). It actually looks, overall, pretty solid, although we’d like to declare a moratorium on using that “Mad World” cover. Yes, it was profoundly emotionally affecting in “Donnie Darko” (well, at least before Richard Kelly mangled it), but come on, guys. Be original.
We’re pegging “Shutter Island” to take a second weekend; even Bruce Willis can’t save a disaster like “Cop Out”.
