DVD Pick of the Week 11/18/08

tropic thunder 208x300Gunaxin.com’s DVD Pick of the Week

There are some great DVDs out this week, and some very interesting DVDs. Paris Je T’Aime, a collection of 18 short films by 18 different directors including the Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, Alfonso Cuarón, and even Wes Craven all about Paris, was released this week. A few DVDs that I’ve never heard of but look interesting were also released this week including:

  • The Devil’s Curse aka Credo in the UK
  • Ultimate Death Trance I don’t know what it is, but how can you go wrong with that title?
  • Sex Machine If the title doesn’t grab you listen to Amazon’s description:

“Sex Machine tells of the affable but simple Hiroshi, who during one sweltering summer in a small, parochial town, moves in with his girlfriend, Haruka.Their lovemaking is as athletic as it is bizarre but a dark storm comes looming when Haruka’s ex boyfriend comes knocking at the door”

There are several great TV seasons coming out this week as well, including:

  • Bones – Season 3
  • Doctor Who: The Complete Fourth Series
  • The Odd Couple – The Final Season
  • Hawaii Five-O – The Fifth Season
  • Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 3 Remastered<
  • McHale’s Navy: Season Four

Of Course, that stuff up there isn’t the reason you’re here, you want to know what DVD we picked this week. First off I wanted to take a look at Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, and if you’ve ever even heard of Hunter S. Thompson you won’t be surprised by that. If you haven’t heard of Hunter S. Thompson, check out Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, either the DVD or the Book or both really (that’s what I did), both are hilarious. Gonzo is a documentary based on the life of Hunter Thompson, it concentrates more on Thompson’s coverage of the 1968 and 1972 presidential election and his unique style of Gonzo Journalism. Check it out if you’re a fan of Hunter Thompson, RottenTomatoes.com gives it 88%, if you’re not check out Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and then watch Gonzo, you know you want to.

Next, I wanted to talk about Wall-E. Wall-E is Pixar’s Latest creation, the people behind Toy Story, and Finding Nemo, and they haven’t let us down on this one. This movie follows Wall-E, a cute robot left behind to clean up the earth and his pursuit of the sleek new robot EVE.

And last, meaning that this is Gunaxin.com’s official DVD Pick of the Week, is Tropic Thunder. What could be better than Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr (in black face) getting shot at in the Jungle. According to RottenTomatoes (where it got 83%):

In it, a desperate director named Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) trying to make a Vietnam war movie drops his pampered actors into the heart of the jungle. Cockburn’s stars include Stiller as an action hero who’s starting to make bad career choices, Jack Black as an insecure low-brow comedy star going through heroin withdrawals, and Robert Downey Jr. as an Australian Oscar winner so lost in his “craft” he underwent a procedure to become black for his role. In the jungle, they remain under the delusion that they are still being filmed even after they encounter a dangerous gang of druglords.
